Seismographic is an ongoing drawing project that started in 2005 as a way of surviving an abject roadtrip. The vibrations and undulations of the vehicle were transcribed onto paper by simply holding the pen in contact with the paper. I've completed over a thousand drawings with this approach by car, train, and bus.
By removing my active volition, the drawings demonstrate not only the “chance” patterns created by the movements and vibrations of the vehicle, but more importantly the necessary ways in which I do interact with the drawing—by calibration—as well as the parameters imposed by anatomy (the weight and range of movement in my hand and arm, for example): equal parts seismograph and Ouija board.
